Native citrus

Australian native citrus is one of the emerging industries we're interested in — finger lime (Citrus australasica), desert lime, and related species. Tissue culture is well suited to clonal propagation of named cultivars for premium native food and export markets.

Industry background. AgriFutures Australia has published a Finger Lime RD&E Plan (2023–2028) identifying propagation and planting-material supply as industry priorities.

Why tissue culture

Finger lime is difficult to propagate reliably from seed (monoembryonic, variable progeny) and from cuttings (low and inconsistent success rates). Named commercial cultivars such as those selected for flesh colour, vesicle size, and fruiting habit must be propagated clonally. Tissue culture provides a scalable alternative where cuttings cannot deliver the required quantity or consistency.

  • Clonal propagation of named finger lime cultivars
  • Clean, disease-tested planting material
  • Rapid multiplication for orchard establishment and variety rollout
  • Applicable to other native Citrus species including C. glauca (desert lime)
