Tea tree oil
Clonal propagation of Melaleuca alternifolia for the Australian tea tree oil industry. Rapid multiplication of improved cultivars selected for yield, oil profile, and disease resistance.
Research basis. AgriFutures Australia runs a dedicated levied Tea Tree Oil Program. See AgriFutures Tea Tree Oil Program Overview and Tea tree oil industry — 25 years.
The industry
The Australian tea tree oil industry is a globally significant producer of Melaleuca alternifolia essential oil. AgriFutures-published material notes an industry-led breeding programme targeting resistance to leaf drop and stem dieback, frost tolerance, higher oil yield, and improved chemotype profile, with cultivar yields reported to have risen significantly over successive selections.
Why tissue culture
New elite cultivars identified through breeding programmes need to be multiplied rapidly and faithfully into commercial plantings. Tissue culture is well suited to Melaleuca propagation — Myrtaceae-family protocols are well understood — and supports true-to-type multiplication of selected clones.
- Clonal multiplication of newly released cultivars
- True-to-type plants for consistent oil profile
- Clean, disease-tested material for new plantings
- Supports the industry breeding-to-planting pipeline
